Longhorn runs fall short against Wauneta-Palisade

Chase County’s game with the Wauneta-Palisade Broncos there last week proved to be a game of runs.
The Broncos capitalized on turnovers in the first quarter to go on a 23-7 run to open the game.
Their dominance continued in the second quarter, going into half ahead 38-19.
Finding themselves trailing by 17 to open the second half, the Longhorns came on a tear of their own to open the third quarter.
With two 3-pointers, a pair of free throws and a bucket by Braden Space, coupled with 3-balls from Taylor Jablonski and Cedric Maxwell, the Longhorns put on a 15-1 run. That pulled them to within five, 33-38, with 4:40 left in the third.
But by the time the quarter ended, the Broncos took advantage of more Longhorn turnovers, going on a 11-1 run for a 34-51 advantage going into the final period.
The Longhorns answered once again. Trailing 36-55, Chase County got three more trey balls, two back-to-back from Jablonski and one from Bennett Bauerle.
Maxwell completed an and-one, coupled with a hoop by Scott Wheeler, to cap a 14-3 run to pull within eight, 50-58.
With 3:40 left in the game, the Longhorns pulled within five, 55-60 on a basket by Space and another 3-pointer from Jablonski.
The Longhorns couldn’t get the ball to fall, either from the three-point arc or inside off the glass.
Finally, the Longhorns were forced to foul but the Broncos could only make one of two.
An ensuing turnover proved to be the dagger in the heart as the Broncs got a layup and a 55-63 lead.
The Broncs would add two more free throws while the Longhorns were unable to score, making the final 55-65.
Bartels said turnovers were definitely a factor in the conttest. For the game, the Longhorns turned the ball over 23 times.
Bartels said the Broncs put on a good press and his players panicked a little bit and weren’t careful with their passes.
While the Longhorns finished 40 percent from the field for the night, they only got off 18 shots in the first half, scoring seven in the first and 12 in the second quarter.
Bartels said they shot much better in the second half, as evidenced by their runs.
