Longhorn basketball chalk up pair of wins in first week of play

The Longhorn boys’ basketball varsity squad is sitting undefeated at 2-0 after winning contests last week at Cozad and a home game against Wauneta-Palisade.
Cozad
Head Coach Chris Bartels was particularly excited about the Cozad win.
“In my five years I’ve been with the basketball team here we’ve never beat them,” he said.
“We’ve had close battles with (Cozad) but we just couldn’t really ever get over that hump.”
The Haymakers are in the same subdistrict bracket as the Longhorns, so “we’ll most likely see them again,” Bartels added.
While the final score was 51-36, Bartels said it felt like a close game until the end.
“That’s a credit to our kids for keeping their foot on the pedal the whole game,” he said.
Mason Nordhausen led the Longhorns against Cozad with 16 points, including four 3-pointers.
Behind him were Cedric Maxwell and Taylor Jablonski with 10 points each.
Maxwell led defensively with nine total rebounds and five assists.
