Lady Longhorns split with Sidney, Ogallala

The Chase County girls’ basketball team ran its record to 3-1 least week after a home loss to Sidney and a road victory at Ogallala.
Five points each from Bryn McNair and Alexis Richmond got CCS off on the right foot against the Raiders Friday, giving Chase County a 10-3 lead. A three pointer to end the first quarter and field goal to start the second quarter cut that advantage to 10-8 quickly. Five points from Richmond and Morgan Peterson gave CCS some breathing room until two baskets by Sidney narrowed the gap back to three points, 15-12. Despite Jordan Jablonski and Jerzee Milner points, two late baskets by Sidney cut the Chase County lead to 18-16 at halftime.
The Longhorns took a six point lead in the third quarter, but were never able to shake the Raiders. Sidney took over in the final five minutes of the quarter and CCS found itself tied at 30-30 then trailing 32-36 after a Sidney buzzer beater.
A six point fourth quarter deficit was too much for Chase County to overcome. Baskets by Jablonski and McNair kept CCS within three points, 36-39, before Richmond answered a Sidney basket with a three pointer. Jablonski responded with to a Raiders’ basket with one of her own to keep the score within two points, 41-43, with 2:30 left in the game. It would be the final points for CCS. A field goal and four straight free throws by Sidney ended any CCS hopes and rounded out the 41-49 final score.
CCS had more steals and fewer turnovers than Sidney on the night. The Raiders advantage on the boards was too much to overcome, however. CCS gave up 15 second chance points, while scoring three.
Longoria said Sidney is a good rebounding team overall,  and pointed out that the Sidney guards were a big part of the offensive rebounding differential.
On what Longoria pointed out as being the Longhorns’ poorest shooting night of the season, Richmond’s 16 points paced CCS. McNair added 11 points and had nine rebounds. Milner and Richmond each grabbed seven rebounds.
If his team was going to have a tough, emotional loss, Longoria said he was glad it’s early in the season.
Bounce back at Ogallala
Milner, Jablonski, Richmond and Weiss all scored early for the Longhorns, while Ogallala (1-2) went scoreless for 2:30 in the quarter helping CCS open up an 11-4 lead. A three pointer from Milner gave Chase County a 18-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Milner added a field goal early in the second quarter, then both teams were quiet offensively until a Kaylie Lotspeich basket. Ogallala cut the CCS double digit lead to 22-18 before a Milner three pointer stopped the run with 42 seconds left the half. Following two Ogallala free throws, Milner dropped in another three pointer with nine seconds in the half to give CCS a 28-21 halftime lead.
The Indians narrowed that gap to one with six straight points to open the second half.
