Lady Longhorns edge out Alliance for season’s first win

There were big changes to the Chase County volleyball team’s lineup last week and little time to work on them. Despite the adversity, the Lady Longhorns picked up their first win of the season, a four-set victory over Class B Alliance (4-5).
CCS had to make changes after middle hitter Gisselle Acuna was injured in a game last weekend.
Chase County Head Coach April Lambert said she knew Jerzee Milner, who had been setting exclusively, is a very strong hitter and didn’t hesitate putting her in an attacking and setting role. Bryn McNair went from playing full-time middle hitter to secondary setter when in the back row.
Alexis Richmond became the new middle for CCS and Kamrie Dillan took Richmond’s right-side hitter position. Liz Reeves came off the bench as a serving specialist for the Lady Longhorns, as well.
With Acuna’s injury on a Saturday then Labor Day on Monday, CCS had two practices to prepare.
“We spent an entire practice working through the lineup just so that everyone felt comfortable with who was hitting where and when, as well as who is on serve receive every rotation,” Lambert said.
“We never have designated spots, so it’s a lot to remember but the girls did well with it.”
Meeting Alliance at Bridgeport, CCS came out and took the first set 25-23. After losing the second set 14-25, during which Lambert said the CCS serve receive broke down, the Lady Longhorns bounced back to win the last two sets 25-19 and 25-21.
Lambert said her team had some great offensive moments and were very strong on the serve, scoring nine aces against the Bulldogs.
Hope Brosius served during a five-point run to swing the advantage to the Lady Longhorns in the first set. Lucy Spady had a similar serving run in the fourth set.
“We took advantage of their hitting and defensive errors,” Lambert added.
Richmond led CCS with 11 kills. Milner and McNair added nine and eight kills, respectively. McNair had 20 assists and Milner nine.
The McNair-to-Richmond pairing was successful for CCS.
“Bryn has Alexis in the front row and Alexis has been one of our most efficient hitters all year in terms of getting those kills,” Lambert said.
