Morgan Peterson splits the Dundy County-Stratton defenders in Chase County’s win last week.

Lady Longhorns earn two more wins

It was a tale of two teams when looking at last week’s opponents of the Chase County girls’ basketball team.
The Longhorns beat a tough Dundy County-Stratton team Jan. 5 before blowing out an outmatched Kimball squad Saturday.
DCS (6-4) gave Chase County all it wanted on the Longhorns’ home court.
The Tigers held a six point advantage for most of the first quarter. With only baskets from Bryn McNair, Jordan Jablonski and Alexis Richmond, CCS trailed 6-12 after the first eight minutes.
Longhorns’ Head Coach Randy Longoria said DCS always puts its best foot forward, adding the Tigers started out the game better than CCS had anticipated.
After a Tigers’ basket to start the second quarter, two buckets by McNair and one from Kora Weiss tightened the score to 12-14.
DCS responded with five straight points, but the Longhorns had an answer. Morgan Peterson and Richmond scored seven straight points for CCS to tie the game at 19.
McNair traded baskets with DCS to end the half before a three pointer by the Tigers made the difference and Chase County trailed 23-24 heading into the locker room.
With a few tweaks to its offense, CCS set the tone in the second half. Richmond and McNair shouldered the offensive load over the first four minutes of the half. The pair spurred the Longhorns to a 34-29 advantage.
Jablonski and Richmond answered DCS baskets and helped CCS maintain a 38-33 lead at the end of the third period.
The Tigers narrowed that lead with a basket to start the fourth quarter, but Richmond and McNair had the answer.
CCS held a 44-39 lead and made 4-8 free throws over the game’s final minute to seal the 48-41 win.
Despite being outshot by the Tigers, the Longhorns stood out in other statistical categories. CCS had more offensive rebounds, points in the paint, transition points and fewer turnovers than the Tigers.
Richmond and McNair led the Chase County scoring with 18 points each.
McNair had eight rebounds, including six offensively.
Longoria was pleased with his team’s defense against the Tigers, and thought Saturday’s home game against Kimball was even better.
CCS held Kimball scoreless in the first quarter and only gave up 19 points in the game.
“Our man defense took Kimball out of its game,” Longoria said, adding the Longhorns were really aggressive.
As he looks down the schedule, Longoria said this will be a good game to build on defensively.
McNair scored 27 points for CCS to lead eight Longhorns in scoring, plus pulled down nine rebounds.
Jablonski nabbed eight steals. Jerzee Milner totaled four assists and six deflections.
