Lady Longhorns collect runner-up honors in McCook

Chase County also upends new team on this year’s schedule

Coach Jodie Schuller said she is not disappointed with a runner-up finish in Saturday’s McCook Tournament.
    It’s quite the opposite.
“We played really well the whole tournament,” she said.
It went well from the beginning, in their first match against 10-3 Cambridge, who had just one loss at the time to Dundy Co. Stratton.
Chase County swept the Lady Trojans in two, after coming from behind in the second game.
“Cambridge is a very good team with some good hitters. That was a good win for us,” Schuller said.
The Lady Longhorns then advanced to the semis, downing Valentine, before reaching the finals against Alliance.
Despite the loss in the championship, Schuller said her team did some good things against an 8-0 Alliance team, which she called “powerful.”
Chase County was 6-3 early this week before a full schedule of matches ahead.
All three Chase County losses have gone to undefeated teams.
On Sept. 11, Chase County hosted Sedgwick County, Colorado, a new team on the schedule, and won in straight sets. It was the Lady Longhorns’ home opener.
Tournament recap
Chase County won the opener in two, 25-17 and 25-22.
Schuller gave credit to her team for not giving up in the second set despite trailing 18-22.
Chase County’s hitters were on fire, Schuller noted, with very few errors as they compiled 25 kills and four errors against Cambridge. That resulted in a .328 hitting efficiency, the best this season.
Allison Owings had nine kills, while Adelaide Maxwell and Madison Schuller scored eight each.
Serving was 93 percent (46-49) with five aces by the team.
Schuller and Mallie McNair each had 10 set assists. Sophie Spady picked up 14 of the team’s 35 digs.
Cambridge finished with 18 kills and 10 errors for a .114 hitting efficiency.
Chase County toppled Valentine in the semi-finals, 25-15 and 25-16.
The Lady Longhorns had another good match offensively with 22 kills and six errors finishing at a .225 hitting efficiency.
Maxwell and Owings led the team with six kills apiece.
With just three missed serves, Chase County finished 93 percent at the line (45-48), while scoring seven aces, three from Owings.
Madison Schuller tallied 10 set assists, while McNair had nine. Spady collected 28 digs out of 72 total.
Valentine was in the minus category for hitting efficiency with six kills and 10 errors.
