Lady Longhorns break four meet records

    Not only did Chase County’s Lady Longhorn track team win last Thursday’s Sutherland Invitational by a wide margin, they broke four meet records along the way.
    Chase County set meet records in all three relays, and freshman Mallie McNair now has the Sutherland meet’s 800 record, after running that open event competitively for the first time. McNair’s 2:21.39 is one of the top times in all classes right now across the state.
    Two of Sutherland’s records were more than 30 years old.
    Coach Troy Hauxwell can’t say enough about his team’s strides just four meets into the season when they completed at Sutherland.
    It was also windy in the afternoon, which slowed many of the times in other events, when three of the four record-setting performances were run, he noted.
    In the 400 meter relay at the end of the meet, Chase County also had a shaky handoff, Hauxwell said, but still broke the meet record with a time just half a second slower than the team ran at state last year.
    “It was amazing,” he said.
    Sophomore Taylor Williams was back for two of the relays last week, after she spent some time out with an injury.
    As expected, senior Destiny Reinke did not compete at Sutherland, as she continues to get over an IT band issue, but Hauxwell expected her back in competition Tuesday at Chase County’s home meet.
    Here are Chase County’s meet record performances at Sutherland:
    800—Mallie McNair, first, 2:21.39; beat old record of 2:23.7 set in 1985 by Deb Spickelmier of Hayes Center.
    400 meter relay—Team of Taylor Williams, Taylin McNair, Katelyn Wheeler, Adelaide Maxwell, first, 50.49; beat old record of 51.1 set in 2000 by Arnold.
    1600 meter relay—Team of Williams, T. McNair, Kadyn Milner, M. McNair, first, 4:16.93; beat old record of 4:19 set in 1998 by Wallace.
    3200 meter relay—Team of M. McNair, Milner, Madison Brown, T. McNair, first, 10:21.57; beat old record of 10:23.3 set by Hayes Center in 1985.    
    Hauxwell pointed out several other good performances from his team last Thursday.        Maxwell, who also ran on the 400 meter relay team, took first in the 100 and second in the 200.
    “She just continues to get faster in these sprints,” he said.
