Lady Longhorns off and running

The Chase County girls’ basketball team opened its season with two very different wins, a comfortable 58-41 home victory over Cozad and a 52-48 nail-biter at McCook.
Against Cozad last Thursday, Alexis Richmond scored the Lady Longhorns first points on the season, a conventional three-point play, and later added two free throws.
Jordan Jablonski gave CCS its first lead of the game, on which Bryn McNair expanded with another conventional three-point play. Two three pointers by Morgan Peterson pushed CCS to a 16-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
CCS Head Coach Randy Longoria said Peterson’s baskets were big ones for the Lady Longhorns.
CCS quickly put Cozad in its place in the second quarter, forcing turnovers and going on a 15-3 run.
Coming out of halftime with a 31-19 advantage, CCS got off to a slow start, but scored 13 points in six minutes to extend its lead to 44-29.
Both teams spent time at the charity stripe over the final half of the fourth quarter. CCS made 5-8 free throws, while Cozad made 4-6.
Richmond led three Lady Longhorns in double figures with 14 points. McNair scored 13 points and Jablonski added 11 points with six assists. McNair pulled down eight offensive rebounds and nine defensive rebounds. Weiss grabbed five steals.
Longoria was happy with the Lady Longhorns’ effective field goal percentage (40%). CCS dominated in transition points, 16-4; points off turnovers, 31-15; and points in the paint, 26-10; while holding an eight rebound advantage.
The Lady Longhorns held Cozad to six two-point field goals (6-34, 18%) and six 3s (6-14, 40%).
Longoria said the Lady Longhorns had their share of bumps, but it was a good win for the first outing.
