Andrea Page thinks about a shot from beyond the arc. The CCS senior had to deal with Yuma’s defensive pressure here, but did sink one in the third quarter. Page was also credited with two steals and four rebounds for Chase County. (Johnson Publications photo)

Lady Longhorn record even at 3-3 after pair of losses

A pair of losses last week dampened the Lady Longhorn girls’ record, dropping it to an even 3-3 with a game played Tuesday this week and a three-day holiday tournament next week.
Coach Mark Bottom noted sickness took its toll on the team in a one-point loss at Sutherland Dec. 12,
And, even though the squad also lost to Colorado top-ranked Yuma last Thursday, he said it was Chase County’s best game played to date.
The team traveled to Wauneta-Palisade Tuesday night this week to play an in-county game that’s been off the schedule for several years.
Then, with just a couple days to practice prior to the NSAA mandated moratorium Dec. 23-27, the Lady Longhorns will be gearing up for next week’s Cabela’s Holiday Shootout in Sidney.
First tourament game for the girls will be Thursday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. against Cheyenne South. Games continue on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 29-30. See the bracket for more details.
Sickness at Sutherland
Three of Coach Bottom’s five varsity starters and others were dealing with sickness at last week’s Sutherland game.
While starters Ragan Nickless, Allison Owings and Mallie McNair still played in the Dec. 12 varsity game, they weren’t at 100 percent, he said.
However, Bottom said “disappointed” is how he’d describe himself after the game.
After some balanced scoring first quarter, Chase County held a 9-2 lead only to see that evaporate by halftime when Sutherland pulled within two, 12-14.
Just one point separated the teams after three, and then Chase County pulled ahead by five in the fourth with just 2:45 left.
But the Lady Longhorns couldn’t hold on. They were outscored in the fourth by two, and lost the game 34-35.
