Lady Broncos split games

With a win over Wallace and loss to Cambridge, the Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team enters this week’s Cattle Trail Tournament with a 1-1 record.
The Broncos opened their season with a rough and tumble 62-47 win at Wallace.
Back to back buckets by Cali Cox in the first quarter helped WP double up on the Wildcats, 12-6. Four of the Broncos’ five starters scored over the game’s first eight minutes.
WP kept its foot on the pedal offensively in the second quarter when six different players scored, including nine points by Haylee Sandman. Despite a strong quarter from Wallace’s Mariah Gardner, who scored 11 in the quarter, WP extended its margin by four to hold a 37-25 halftime lead.
WP Head Coach Matt Cox said Gardener is a good ball player and the Broncos went to a box and one defense to slow her down. M. Cox credited Zoey Boos with a great job of “chasing her around” and forcing other Wildcats to score.
Wallace knocked one point off that advantage in the third quarter, but the Broncos, despite only making 2-8 free throws, outscored Wallace by four to end the game.
“I loved our tempo and we did a nice job in our half court offense as well,” said M. Cox.
“It’s nice to get a win on the road the first game of the year,” he added.
Eight players scored for the Broncos. H. Sandman led WP with 19 points. Alexa Sandman and GraCee Goings scored nine and eight points, respectively. Peyton Cox pulled down 12 rebounds in her Bronco debut. Payton Yearous had nine boards for WP. Boos had five assists.
WP pulled down 20 offensive rebounds and held a seven rebound advantage over the Wildcats.
The game set the tone for the Broncos’ season as an aggressive team.
M. Cox said WP is going to play defense full court with no fear. He expects his team will pick up fouls, but thinks the Broncos can clean up the cheap ones.
“We’ve got a deep bench and if someone picks up some early cheap ones, we can fill in pretty well,” he said, adding, WP is just trying to earn some extra possessions, because those add up by the end of the game.
Fall to the Trojans
Long, tall Cambridge came to town Friday and eked out a 43-47 win over the Broncos.
M. Cox said the Trojan press gave WP some fits, altering the Broncos’ game plan.
“We had to move our bigs up to pass over their traps, our guards were just so out sized they couldn’t pass over those traps,” M. Cox said.
Back to back three pointers by A. Sandman and C. Cox gave WP a 10-6 first quarter lead. Cambridge went on a 12-point run to end the quarter, however.
WP nibbled into the lead and climbed to within two points, 22-24, after an offensive rebound and put back by P. Cox. Cambridge scored the final three points of the half, leaving the Broncos trailing 22-27 at halftime.
