Lady Broncos beat Falcons, Roughriders

The Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team ran its record to 8-4 with wins over Hitchcock County and Southwest.
The Broncos steamrolled Hitchcock County Friday.
WP took a 10-0 lead to start the game, but the Falcons closed that gap to 13-8 by the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was all about the Broncos. The WP defense held Hitchcock County scoreless for five and a half minutes.
Six WP players scored in the quarter and the team was 11-11 on free throws. Haylee Sandman scored 10 of WP’s 27 second quarter points.
GraCee Goings,Payton Yearous and Cali Cox made second half three pointers as WP cruised in the second half, winning 67-24.
Peyton Cox scored 20 points in three quarters for WP. H. Sandman had a team high 22 points.
WP had its hands full Saturday at Southwest.
Four Broncos scored in the first quarter as WP took an 11-10 lead.
Offensive production slowed in the second quarter. C. Cox and P. Cox scored WP’s six points compared to Southwest totaling 17 points over the span.
WP Head Coach Matt Cox said the Broncos dug themselves into a hole.
Cox said his team came out with more energy in the second half. As a team that likes to press and get the ball up the court, Cox said his team thrives in chaos.
After a halftime talk about playing with more intensity, Cox said his squad did that in the second half.
The WP defense held the Roughriders to six points in the third quarter, while the offense found its rhythm.
H. Sandman and C. Cox traded baskets for the Broncos. Goings came off the bench to make two three pointers to help erase the 10 point halftime deficit and turn it into a 36-33 advantage.
Despite H. Sandman being injured in the third quarter and C. Cox going down late in the fourth quarter, the Broncos outscored Southwest over the game’s final eight minutes.
Zoey Boos and Alexa Sandman each made fourth quarter three pointers. C. Cox, P. Cox and Goings also scored from the floor as time ran down in the 52-48 win.
Cox said he was really proud of WP’s bench players.
“My bench was spectacular from the middle of the third to the middle of the fourth,” he said, adding “I was very proud of them. They built a lead and we were lucky enough to sustain it.”
C. Cox scored 12 points for WP and P. Cox added 10 points.
