Lady Broncos battle, fall to DCS Tigers

The Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team wasn’t able duplicate its Cattle Trail Tournament win over Dundy County-Stratton last week. The Broncos entered Christmas break with a 5-3 record after a loss at DCS.
The Tigers had their long range game humming early in the contest. Alexa Sandman countered for the Broncos with two three pointers of her own, but it wasn’t enough for WP and the Broncos trailed 10-21 at the end of the first quarter.
WP fell farther behind in the second quarter with DCS taking a 17 point lead. An eight point run by the Broncos narrowed the gap to single digits, 24-33, until the Tigers scored the final four points of the half.
Cali Cox scored eight points in the first half, and continued to put points on the board for the Broncos in the second half.  Cox scored five points and Haylee Sandman eight points to get WP back in the game in the third quarter. The Broncos trailed by eight points, 42-50, at the start of the fourth quarter.
A full court press by WP kept DCS on its heels. A. Sandman and Cox, who each made three treys in the game, sank fourth quarter baskets from long range to bring WP to with in three points, 52-55, with two minutes remaining.
Six Tiger free throws down the stretch sealed the Broncos’ fate, a 54-61 loss.
Cox led WP with 18 points. A. Sandman scored 13 points and H. Sandman added 10 points.
