Juniors edge Cheylin 9-7 in preseason scrimmage

In a preseason scrimmage against the K18 Cougars of Cheylin, Kansas, Imperial’s Juniors put on an offensive show for the hometown crowd last Thursday.
Defeating Cheylin 9-7, Imperial chalked up nine hits, including a first inning two-run homer from Trevor Peterson in the seven-inning contest at Campbell Park.
Imperial was up 5-0 after just two innings as Cheylin struggled defensively, committing four errors.
Cheylin put their first two runs across the plate in the fourth, scoring two but then added four in the fifth as the team batted around, and took a slim 6-5 lead before Imperial’s half of the inning.
After putting one across in the fourth, Imperial added three more in the fifth, scoring on  a trio of walks and a double from Peterson. That put Imperial up 9-6.
A two-out double in the sixth gave Cheylin another run, but that would be the end of the scoring for both teams, as Imperial held on to the 9-7 win.
Austin Laird led things off on the mound for Imperial and went two innings, allowing no runs on no hits and striking out three. Morel Jurado and Braxton McKinney came in on relief.
At the plate, the juniors racked up nine hits led by Peterson and Tell Richardson, each credited with multiple hits. Peterson went 3-for-4 while Richardson was 2-for-2.
Cheylin tallied six hits on the day, and collected seven stolen bases.
On May 22, the Imperial and Cheylin juniors also scrimmaged in Benkelman. Imperial lost the opener 12-10, but won the nightcap 7-2.
