Junior high wrestling team opens season at Sutherland

Season marked with COVID-19 restrictions

It’s going to be a different season for the junior high wrestling team.
With COVID-19 still a factor and affecting activities, Coach Matt Vlasin said it is presenting some challenges.
Despite that, the Chase County junior high team with 19 on the roster opened its 2020 season last Thursday at the Sutherland Invitational.
Fewer days of practice before the opener was just one challenge, Vlasin said.
“With almost two weeks less practice than most years, I felt like we were not as prepared as we would like to have been,” he said.
“Also, wearing masks and social distancing made it a challenge to get warmed up for each match,” he added.
There were no fans allowed in the gym at Sutherland, and the live feed they where trying to broadcast on Facebook was lost.
“With all these challenges, I feel like the day went pretty well and the kids wrestled tough. We now know the little things we need to work on, Vlasin said.
Here are the results from the Sutherland meet:
First place—Camron Lempke, Salvador Venegas, Westyn Mendenhall, Thomas Reeves.
Second place—Miles Hanes, Malachi Christensen, Tucker Mollendor, Harrison Foote.
Third place— Kevin Fregoso, George Colton, Isaac Stretesky.
Fourth place—Bailey Cook, Gavin Wisnieski, Brad Speaker.
