Jay Wood takes gold at World Jiu-Jitsu Championship

Imperial native Jay Wood has left another mark on the world of sports.
Wood recently won gold at the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (IBJJF) No Gi World Championships in California.
“It was a pretty amazing experience and to know I belong amongst the best in the world is mind-boggling,” Wood said.
Wood, a 2003 graduate of Chase County Schools, lives in the Cincinnati area with his sons and wife Alisha (Large)—also a CCS grad.
Jiu-Jitsu is a form of martial arts that is similar to high school wrestling Wood competed in at CCS.
During his Longhorn wrestling career, Wood won the state wrestling title in Class C twice, in 2002 and 2003 in the 152 weight division.
“After that, I wrestled at University of Nebraska at Omaha and fought MMA (mixed martial arts) professionally for about seven years,” Wood said.
In August, Wood competed at the Las Vegas International Open International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) Jiu-Jitsu Championship.
He trains for jui jitsu seven to 10 hours per week for preparation.
“I also train my clients and coach youth wrestling which keeps me moving quite a bit,” Wood said.
Wood said his wife, Alisha, has been very supportive.
“She is amazing,” he said. “She even trains jiu jitsu with my team.”
