Hinojosa punches ticket to state with district championship

The Chase County wrestlers traveled to Bridgeport Saturday to compete in the C-4 district meet. With a lot of top teams in attendance, Chase Co. had a tough time qualifying kids for the state meet.
At the end of the first session on Friday, Chase Co. had just one wrestler that hadn’t suffered a loss.
Eli Hinojosa continued with his undefeated season, closing the meet with a pin over Treyvon Brooks (37-8) of Broken Bow and earning the number one seed at the state tournament.
The only other wrestler to make it to the heartbreak round was sophomore Trevor Peterson.
Peterson, who qualified last year for the state meet, fell in the consolation semi-finals to Ty Richardson of Ainsworth with a 0-6 decision to take him out of the tournament.
Peterson has been out with a broken hand which left him unable to wrestle since the holiday break. That is a tough order to come back from—that long of break and wrestling the top competitors.
Caleb Weiss and Caine Haarberg both qualified last year but were unable to get through this year.
Weiss pulled muscles in his back at the SPVA tournament and was not cleared by the doctor to compete at the district meet.
Haarberg lost his match in the quarter finals to Jacob Lech (32-10) of Ord by a 4-7 decision which was aided by a late takedown with the use of Haarberg’s headgear that was unseen by the official.
In the third round of consolations, Haarberg fell in a very close decision, 3-5, to Lane McGinley of Valentine. These two had wrestled in the Valentine tournament with McGinley winning by pin.
Evan Fisher had a good showing at the tournament, going 2-2, but fell two wins short of qualifying for the state tournament.
Levi Nance went 1-2 in the 160 pound division as did Alex Gomez at 120 pounds.
Brit Gockley, Jose Medrano and Kenyan Biesecker all went 0-2 to finish their year.
