Hinojosa, Page garner Ray Magsamen Outstanding Senior Athlete honors

Eli Hinojosa and Andrea Page earned the 2018 Ray Magsamen Senior Athlete Awards presented last week during the 7-12 end-of-year awards program.
Awarding them at the May 9 academic awards program was a departure from past years when the award was announced, most recently, at an athletic awards banquet.
Activities Director Troy Hauxwell said Chase County coaches have or are holding their own recognition banquets at the conclusion of their individual seasons, mirroring what had been done before the banquet idea arose.
Both Hinojosa and Page are four-year, three sport athletes and have been important contributors to CCS athletics, said A.D. Hauxwell.
He said that full participation throughout high school separated them from a lot of other quality senior athletes this year.
In the selection of the Ray Magsamen winners, all CCS head coaches get a vote based on a long list of criteria which awards points in several areas.
Grade point average is a part of the awarding of points, and is first on the list, Hauxwell noted.
Senior athletes also receive points for each sport they compete in, letters earned, individual recognition such as all-conference selection, all district teams, all-star selection and more.
When all those are tallied, coaches vote on the athletes with the most points, also taking into account character, services and leadership to the school and sport.
Hauxwell said the consideration of character is a big part of the selection, and both of this year’s athletes fit that bill.
Both Hinojosa and Page  received a $500 scholarship from the Longhorn Booster Club.
