Girls tally load of personal bests in home meet win

Chase County looks to be favorite in Friday’s SPVA Conference meet

One thing sure stood out for Coach Troy Hauxwell after his team won its home Chase County Invitational last week.
Thirty-two personal records (PRs) were recorded by the Lady Longhorns, top to bottom, in the 18 running and field events.
“Overall, that’s what sticks out to me,” he said.
That’s going to carry well into this Friday’s SPVA Conference Meet in Sutherland, where Chase County is likely to repeat as champion.
With a good group of seniors, North Platte St. Pat’s will be the team to beat Friday, Hauxwell said.
Bridgeport will also bring some good distance runners and Hershey has some speed and a good high jumper.
The meet has a 10 a.m. MT start time in Sutherland.
On Tuesday, the Lady Longhorns expect to send several athletes to the Best of the Midwest, also in Sutherland. The top eight athletes, based on marks so far this season, will be invited for the 2 p.m. MT Best of the Midwest meet.
Big win at home
Chase County’s girls won the team title April 16 by nearly 58 points. Ogallala was second in a field of six total teams.
Of the 18 events (Chase County includes a weightman’s relay), the Lady Longhorns won 10 of them.
They scored in every event but one, and medaled three varsity athletes in 10 of them.
Chase County awards medals and scores athletes in eight places, instead of awarding team trophies.
Again, the Lady Longhorns dominated the sprints as Adelaide Maxwell, Taylor Williams and Kamrie Dillan went one, two and three in both.
In the 100, all three ran PRs, along with the next four place-winners from other schools. In the 200, Williams and Dillan set PRs.
“Those three PRs in the 100, that’s something to note,” Hauxwell said.
With the best weather the team has had all season, the PRs continued as the events unfolded.
Other gold medal performances were turned in by Mallie McNair in the 400 and 800, Allison Owings in the shot and discus and all four relay teams (400, 1600, 3200, weightman’s).
Besides McNair’s continued dominance in the 400 and 800 (she ran her season’s best in the 400), freshman Jordan Jablonski is showing a lot of promise in those races. She registered two PRs as she took third in the 400 and fourth in the 800.
Besides Owings’ pair of golds in the throws, Hauxwell said it was nice to see Getsemani Hinojoza advance to the shot put finals in a field of 35, where she placed eighth with a PR.
Sadie Peterson and Morgan Peterson both threw PRs in the discus, where they finished sixth and seventh.
Hauxwell also highlighted the pair of seconds turned in by freshman Lucy Spady in the 1600 and 3200.
In the 3200, Spady ran a PR. Teammates Caelyn Long and Madison Brown were right behind her in third and fourth place, and also scored in the 1600, as well.
Hauxwell is happy with the progress shown by his young hurdles—freshmen Jerzee Milner and Matalie Wallin. Junior Hannah Meeske is also making an impact, after switching to those events this year.
All three of them scored in both hurdle events.
Chase County’s athletes had a rough day on the long jump runway, as several scratched and no one scored.
But, Ashley Bubak stayed consistent in the triple jump, with a second place PR effort.
Brooklyn Christensen went 8’6” in the pole vault for her best effort this season.
