Girls’ team makes cut for state

By a slim four points at the district meet, Chase County’s girls edged Sidney for third place, assuring them a trip to the Class C State Meet this Friday.
As one of the top three teams at last Thursday’s C-4 District Meet in Ogallala, the entire girls’ team of six runners will be in Friday afternoon’s state race at the Kearney Country Club.
Among the Chase County team members were two medalists in the top 15—Madison Brown and Caelyn Long.
The Class C girls’ race is the first of the four classes to run at state, starting at 12 noon CT.
Coach Carl Zuege said the team has already set a goal to finish among the top 10 Class C teams Friday.
“We knew we’d have to perform well last week to get to state,” Zuege said.
About halfway through the district race with Chadron and Mitchell looking to finish one and two, he felt it would come down to Chase County and Sidney battling for the third place team spot.
At that point, he and fellow coach Chris Bartels started counting places.
“We knew we had some places to make up,” he said.
