Future of high school bowling in hands of NSAA

Competitive high school bowling in the state of Nebraska could come to an end unless the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) takes it on as a sanctioned sport.
District NSAA meetings in January will have presentations in support of adding bowling to the NSAA list of sponsored sports.
High school students at Chase County Schools (CCS) have participated in bowling the past 10 years through the Nebraska High School Bowling Federation, and just last weekend, competed at the Class C State Tournament.
However, this could be the final year if the NSAA doesn’t take on the new sport.
Denise Smith, who has coached the Chase County high school team the last 10 years, said bowling federation officials at the state tournament indicated the federation will fold if the NSAA doesn’t take on bowling.
If NSAA does, the federation will work with NSAA for a year in transition, she was told.
Smith said she’s averaged about 10 bowlers each year on the Chase County team.
Troy Hauxwell, Activities Director at CCS, said he’ll be at the NSAA District 5 meeting in Holdrege Jan. 10 when the bowling presentation will be given.
He said it will be interesting to see how it’s presented.
“They will need a good plan in front of the schools on how it’s all going to work,” Hauxwell said.
One of the big issues he believes that will come up is getting small schools to support the move whose hometowns do not have bowling alleys.
It will also be interesting to learn, Hauxwell said, what the proposal regarding expenses will be for costs that could include renting bowling alleys, along with the extensive travel expenses some schools, including Chase County, may have getting to bowling competitions.
There will also be questions, Hauxwell believes, on how another athletic offering can be fit into busy schedules already, especially among the smaller schools.
Into what season (fall, winter or spring) bowling would be placed will also draw some discussion, he said.
