Five seniors to lead Longhorn volleyball squad

While there may still be some uncertainty surrounding the 2020 Chase County volleyball schedule, one thing first-year Lady Longhorn Head Coach April Lambert knows for sure is she won’t be starting from scratch.
CCS returns five players with starting experience: seniors Kora Weiss and Alexis Richmond, junior Jerzee Milner and sophomores Bryn McNair and Gisselle Acuna.
Other returning letterwinners include seniors Kamrie Dillan and Hope Brosius, juniors Chloe Dillan and Lucy Spady and sophomore Liz Reeves.
Overall, 25 athletes reported to fall practice. Players were in the weightroom and attended clinics over the summer. Precautions including temperature checks and frequent sanitizing breaks were started over the summer and will continue through the fall.
Many players and coaches are wearing masks during practices.
“We gave the girls the option to wear them or not with the understanding that if they do have them on, they likely would not have to be put into a situation where they would have to quarantine,” Lambert said. “We want the girls to have the best chance of having a season that we possibly can.”
The team attended team camp in Sutherland and a position camp at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Two summer team camps were cancelled.
The summer gym time gave Lambert a chance to see who she has to work with.
“They work hard and don’t get too rattled.  They enjoy the game and they are aggressive, especially on defense,” Lambert said. “We’ve been working to translate that aggression to our offense and serving game.”
She added that her team’s seniors have really stood out with their leadership and positivity.
“They have organized some team events and are very communicative about team goals,” she said.
Fans can expect the team’s defense and speed to stand out.
Lambert said there is rarely a time in practice when a ball hits the floor without pursuit.
“We also have a lot of age and experience with our defensive specialists being some of our older girls,” she added.
But the Longhorns do have areas to work on.
