Every game important for Bronco boys’ basketball

The young Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball team will have to learn quickly this season.
WP Head Coach Rod Gaston said each game will be  big and important for the Broncos so learning how to compete early in the season is one of WP’s biggest goals.
“We do not have an easy game in December and about half of them will be against conference opponents,” Gaston said.
“We need to work at getting better each week and show improvement as the ultimate goal is winning games at the end of February and into March,” he said.
The Broncos have one senior and no freshman on their squad, but Gaston said practices have been very competitive and he is working hard to get as many repetitions in for his players as possible after so many months since they last played.
Each day WP is seeing improvements and adding something new, Gaston added.
Braxton McKinney is the team’s only senior and leads a group of five letterwinners, including Garrett Hanna, Aidan Kennicutt, Grant Walker and Allen Ramirez.
McKinney, Hanna and Kennicutt started games last year, but Kennicutt will miss at least a portion of the season after being injured during football season. Gaston complimented McKinney’s leadership.
With six juniors and four sophomores, Gaston said team members are all working to find their role on the squad with some are trying different positions as everyone finds what makes the team work best together.
“Depth is something we hope to develop early as we play a lot of games in December,” Gaston said, adding, “By having players performing different roles we will be able to see where they best fit. “
