Dozen Lady Longhorns have shot to repeat state title

Six school records fall as Chase County dominates districts

Coach Troy Hauxwell said he asks himself, “I wonder when they are going to hit their limit?”
That question could get answered this week when Chase County’s girls have a shot at another Class C state track championship.
Winning Chase County’s first title last year by just half a point was exciting for the coaches, team and community.
Will they celebrate again in Omaha this week?
If Chase County’s performance at the District C-11 meet last Thursday is any indication, the Lady Longhorns will be at the top of Class C when the final events conclude Saturday at Omaha Burke.
However, Hauxwell is not one to make predictions.
“For us now, it’s continuing to focus on the process. We cannot focus on the end result,” he said.
He will emphasize to his athletes that their focus must be things they can control—how they warm up, sleep, eat and get mentally prepared.
“If you do that the rest will fall into place,” he said.
However, he did say his team has enough depth and if they duplicate how they performed at districts “we’ll be in the mix” for another state title.
Hauxwell added he’d really like to see these girls, especially the seniors, go out on top.
He recalled the senior class were eighth graders in his first year at CCS.
“I saw how competitive they were in PE class. I saw potential that first year for a lot of success,” he said.
District win margin huge
Hauxwell was a bit surprised himself when his team won the district title by 94 points, leaving host Mitchell with the runner-up plaque.
Not only did they dominate a very strong district field in Mitchell, Chase County athletes set six new school records, took the district championship in seven events and two relays and will head into state with some of the top times and marks in all of Class C.
In all, 12 Lady Longhorns qualified in 13 events.
Qualifiers include Katelyn Wheeler, Allison Owings, Andrea Page, Sarah Allen, Josie Peterson, Peyton Fiedler, Adelaide Maxwell, Mallie McNair, Taylin McNair, Destiny Reinke, Kadyn Milner and Taylor Williams.
Several are in multiple events with sisters Taylin and Mallie McNair leading the group with four events each.
Chase County’s 400 and 3200 meter relay teams have the fastest district times coming into the state meet.
It’s no surprise that the teams broke school records, as well.
The 3200 meter team of M. McNair, Reinke, Milner and T. McNair also destroyed their own school record with their first place district run of 9:37.35. The team’s Chase Co. meet time this year of 9:45.36 held the record for about a month.
But as they compete in the relay in Friday morning’s first event, they’ll be eyeing the state Class C 3200 meter relay record of 9:36.41 set in 1984 by Hastings St. Cecilia.
Likewise, the 400 meter relay team of Williams, T. McNair, Wheeler and Maxwell ran a 50.05 to break the school record they set last year in Ogallala.
