Chase County softball team hoping for full season

    The Chase County Lady Longhorn softball team schedule has a little different look this year.
    That’s a good thing, according to Head Coach Denise Smith. Games will start a little later this year, with the first pitch of the season coming Tuesday in Southern Valley.
    The season typically starts the first week of school which can be mentally tough for players.
    But this year it’s one less thing for Smith to worry about with her young team.
    The Lady Longhorns’ roster features six seniors, two juniors, seven sophomores and three freshmen.
    The team has five returning starters, seniors Ashlie Benge, Morayah Cupp, Courtney Odens, Sadie Peterson and Ryley Vrbas, plus junior letterwinners Ella O’Neil and Markenna Terryberry.
    Work schedules made it tough for many of the players to be on weights over the summer, but, playing through the city, Smith was able to coach the team this summer for some practices to work on the basics and a double-header with Ogallala. Two team summer camps were cancelled.
    The team completed one week of conditioning and one week of two-a-day practices leading up to the start of school.
