Chase County adds two to win column

The Chase County boys’ basketball team has won four of its last five games thanks to last week’s wins over Dundy County-Stratton and Kimball.
The DCS win was a big one for the Longhorns. A sub district opponent, the Tigers came in with an 8-1 record.
The game remained close in the first quarter until the four minute mark. DCS pulled down three offensive rebounds and scored over a three minute span. Clay Meeske made a three pointer to make the score 11-14, but a late layup by the Tigers had CCS trailing by five after the game’s first eight minutes.
After two baskets by Cedric Maxwell and one from Tysen Lempke in the paint, DCS went to work from the three point ling. The Tigers made three three pointers, one of which Meeske answered. CCS trailed 20-25 as the teams traded baskets. Keenan Cole scored on aa inbounds play with two seconds left to pull CCS to within three, 26-29, at halftime.
Meeske and Maxwell scored the second half’s first seven points to give CCS the lead, 33-29. DCS answered with an eight point run to retake the lead.
CCS Head Coach Chris Bartels said it seemed like when the Longhorns went on a scoring run, DCS always matched it or did one better.
Two driving Maxwell baskets, paired with a bucket by Kade Anderson and three pointer by Meeske, gave the Longhorns a 42-41 advantage. The Tigers closed the quarter with four straight points, leaving CCS trailing heading into the fourth quarter.
DCS stretched its lead to seven points, 51-44, with five minutes left in the game. But, the Longhorn defense stepped up to hold the Tigers scoreless over the remainder of the game.
With CCS trailing 50-51 and a minute left, the Tigers spread the court and slowed the game down. After DCS missed a driving basket, Mason Nordhausen got loose from the Tigers’ half court pressure. The senior made a layup and Maxwell later hit two key free throws to finish off the 54-51 win.
“Our kids never gave up and kept fighting, and it paid off big time on Tuesday night,” Bartels said.
Maxwell led CCS with 14 points. Nordhausen, Cole and Lempke each scored nine. Meeske added eight.
Maxwell pulled down six rebounds. Cole and Lempke each grabbed five boards. Meeske had six assists.
Bartels said it was a great team win.
With the possibility of a second match up in the post season, Bartels said, it was definitely nice to compete against the Tigers once before subdistricts roll around.
“DCS is a good basketball team with a bunch of athletes, and I have a feeling we will be playing them again in February,” Bartels said, adding fans can expect the same type of competitive atmosphere.
CCS hosted Kimball Saturday.
The Longhorns completely dominated the game, holding Kimball to 11 points.
The clock ran throughout the second half after the Longhorns’ 45-5 halftime lead. No player played for more than 17 minutes in the game.
With 26 transition points and 42 points in the paint, the Longhorns made 62.9% of their two point baskets.
“Kimball was a great game for our varsity guys to go out and take care of business in the first half, and then let the bench guys who don’t get as much playing time play the whole second half,” Bartels said.
“It definitely wasn’t the most competitive game, but it was fun to see all of our guys play a bunch of minutes,” he added.
Jake German led CCS with 13 points. Nick Rau also finished in double figures, totaling 10 points. Eleven Longhorns scored in the game.
German and Emmitt Zuege had seven rebounds each. Nordhausen had five assists.
