CCS Softball drops a pair of games

Thursday evening, the Longhorn softball team hosted the Bayard Tigers (4-10) for a double-header at Schroeder Field.
In the first game, the Longhorns got the offense working for a while, plating runs in three of the first four innings.
After holding the Tigers off the scoreboard in the first inning, the Longhorns plated a run in the bottom half to take a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers responded with five in the top of the second and the Horns were held to zero, bringing the score to 1-5, after two.
Bayard scored five in the third, two in the fourth and seven in the fifth, while holding the Longhorns to one, three and zero, through the five inning contest.
Marley Randall pitched all five innings for the Horns, giving up 18 hits, 19 earned runs, nine walks and eight strike-outs.
Freshman Kaidence Lee pitched all five innings for Bayard, giving up three hits, five runs, six walks and 14 strike-outs.
On offense, Violet Sparrow and Alyssa Schilke each had three hits, Haylee Markee and Randall each had one. Scoring for the Horns was Yesi Ruiz scoring twice and Sparrow, Randall and Markee each crossing the plate once.
In the second game, the Horns offense got shut down, getting just one hit the entire game. Randall pitched two innings, giving up eight hits, 13 runs, nine walks and four strike-outs.
Ruiz came in to pitch the third inning, giving up three hits, four runs, three walks and two strike-outs. The Horns fell in three innings to Bayard, 0-17. That leaves the Longhorn record at 1-14, with just five games remaining before sub-district play.
The Horns traveled to Southern Valley/Alma (8-11),for a triangular that included Kearney Catholic (18-4), on Sept. 30. On Oct. 2, the Horns will travel to Cozad for a postponed game from Sept. 23.
The regular season will end in Chadron, when the Horns battle Chadron (11-10), and Alliance (8-16), on Oct. 4.
Sub-districts will be played on Oct. 6., with the location to be determined.
