Friday night, Sept. 5, the Longhorn football team fell to the Gothenburg Swedes, 41-0, dropping the Horns record to 0-2. The Swedes size difference seemed to be too much for the Longhorns.
The game started off in the right direction after the Longhorns won the coin flip and deferred to the second half.
Gothenburg chose to receive the opening kick, but fumbled the ball and the Longhorns took over deep in Gothenburg territory. The Horns were unable to move the ball and turned it over on downs.
Gothenburg wasted no time moving the ball 65 yards down the field for their first score. The kick was good and the Longhorns trailed 0-7, five minutes into the game.
On the Longhorns next possession, they couldn’t get anything going on the first three downs. Cristobal Tarango Flores dropped back to punt, but the snap sailed over his head. The Swedes took over on the Longhorn 2 yard line.
A penalty backed them up five on first down. Two plays later, the Swedes ran it in from the seven yard line to go up 0-14, midway through the first quarter.
While the Horns struggled to get the offense going, the Swedes added three more scores before the half to lead 0-34 at the break.
The Horns struggles continued in the second half. After starting on their own 20, the Horns couldn’t move the ball, forcing a punt from deep in Longhorn territory. After another bad snap, the punt was downed at the Longhorn 32 yard line.
The Gothenburg first string waisted no time running it in for fot their sixth touchdown of the night. The kick was good and with the score 0-41, the clock would not stop for anything but time-outs and turnovers.
The Swedes started to get some second string players in after that. The Longhorns threatened to score a couple of times, driving deep into Swede territory, but could not get it punched in.
Next Friday, Sept. 12, the Longhorns will travel to play Gordon-Rushville, with kickoff set for 6:00 p.m. Gordon-Rushville has a 0-2 record, coming off a 8-67 loss to ONeill.
