CCS junior high boys’ track team raising funds for Sutherland student

    This year’s Chase County Schools (CCS) junior high boys’ track team is raising funds for fellow trackster Gavin Myers, a student at Sutherland Public Schools.
    Myers wheelchair races in the 1600 competition. Because his old wheelchair was not specifically made for racing, the schools in the SPVA conference are teaming together to raise funds for a new race wheelchair.
    The wheelchair has already been purchased, and schools are now racing to raise the $3,600 needed to pay it off.
    “This has been a great story of compassion, the conference coming together, sports and teams working together all because of who Gavin is,” said Mark Bottom, junior high boys’ track coach at CCS.
    The end goal for each SPVA school is $600. CCS’s girls’ basketball team raised $450 and the junior high boys’ track goal is $75.
    The fundraiser originated in Hershey Public School by the assistant boys’ track coach Tyler Cronin with help from some of their patrons.
    In a powerpoint sent to the schools to help explain the fundraiser it says, “We all have seen him. We all have cheered for him as he crosses that finish line for the mile. When every spectator cheers on Gavin as he crosses the finish line we see what sports can truly do—bring people together.”
    “I think this reflects really well on all our communities and the conference. I have been helped just getting to participate,” said Bottom.
