Longhorn senior Jake German gets fouled hard on his way to the basket during Chase County’s home loss to Sidney Friday.

CCS boys fall to Sidney, Ogallala

The Chase County boys’ basketball team has an even 2-2 record after losses last week to Sidney and Ogallala.
“We played two very quality opponents this week with Sidney and Ogallala,” CCS Head Coach Chris Bartels said.
“We came out with two losses, but we learned a lot of valuable lessons along the way that will make us better down the road when we get into conference and district play,” he said.
The Longhorns took on 3-2 Sidney at home Friday without senior Cedric Maxwell.
Bartels said Sidney came out firing on Friday night.
“It seemed like they could do no wrong for most of the game,” Bartels said, noting there’s not much a team can do when an opponent shoots as well as Sidney did.
“I thought we played hard, we just couldn’t match what they were doing offensively. Sidney played very well on Friday night and you have to tip your cap to them,” he said.
Clay Meeske scored Chase County’s first three points, followed by a three pointer from Mason Nordhausen to double the Longhorns’ point total.         Kade Anderson tossed in two free throws and Jake German added another, before Keenan Cole wrapped up first quarter scoring for CCS with a three pointer.
Trailing by eight points, Chase County stuck with the Red Raiders in the second quarter. Nordhausen knocked down another three pointer and Meeske added a field goal between a Cole free throw and three pointer. Anderson heated up from behind the arc, nailing two threes. CCS sunk free throws from Tysen Lempke and Cole before a two-point field goal by Nordhausen made the score 31-38 at halftime.
Anderson started Chase County off with a three pointer in the second half. Meeske and Lempke added field goals, then Cole chipped in two free throws. Once more, Nordhausen rounded out scoring for a quarter with a field goal.
CCS faced a 14-point deficit, 42-56, heading into the fourth quarter and couldn’t get any closer despite back-to-back three pointers by Brandon Mintling to end the game, a 54-70 loss.
Anderson led four Longhorns in double figures with 13 points. Meeske added 11 points, plus Nordhausen and Cole each scoring 10 points.
Nordhausen nabbed team highs with eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
The task didn’t get any easier Saturday night at undefeated Ogallala.
Despite the loss, Bartels said he thought his team did a lot of really good things.
Nordhausen field goals got CCS on the scoreboard. A Meeske bucket and two free throws by Nordhausen kept the game close, with Anderson hitting a field goal and  Maxwell returning to action with a three pointer to end the quarter. The Longhorns trailed 13-15, but the second quarter was all about the Indians.
