Cambridge win gives girls big lift heading into post-season

A 22-point fourth quarter put the exclamation point on a big 60-53 win for the Lady Longhorns Saturday at Cambridge.

Chase County Coach Mark Bottom said it was likely his team’s best effort at closing out a game as the Lady Longhorns headed into C1-11 post-season play this week.

Cambridge was 15-6 coming into Saturday’s game after five straight wins, the biggest against North Platte’s St. Pat’s on Feb. 2.

The 52-40 defeat of St. Pat’s was the Lady Irish’s first loss. However, St. Pat’s played the Cambridge game without their leading scorer, Kaleigh Kummer, who sprained an ankle in the Chase County game the night before.

“They were coming off a big win against St. Pat’s,” Bottom said.

But in addition to a great fourth quarter, Coach Bottom said his team had balanced scoring (three were in double figures). They also switched up their defense to keep Cambridge guessing.

While Chase County was in zone defense most of the game, they pressed off and on, Bottom noted.

“That really helped keep them off balance,” he said.

So did Chase County’s offense.

Three Lady Longhorns were in double figures and a fourth player with nine is the kind of offense Coach Bottom has been waiting for all season.
