Bronco wrestling opens new year at Southwest

The Wauneta-Palisade wrestling team didn’t waste any time jumping back into action after the Christmas break. The team traveled to the Southwest Invite Saturday.
WP Coach Danny Schluckebier said Southwest always hosts a good tournament and Saturday was no different with a lot of good wrestlers there.
“We went into today knowing it would be a hard meet for us and we got thrown around a little,” Schluckebier said, adding a meet right after break always shows every school what wrestler wants to compete and what wrestler doesn’t.
Conner Bryner led all Broncos with a second place finish at 160 pounds. Bryner won his first two matches in the four-man pool before falling in his final match.
Hunter Miner, wrestling up a weight class, lost to the eventual champion early, but picked up a pin in his second match Miner fell one win short of the 145-pound consolations finals.
Cole Hamilton lost his first match to the eventual champion, then won his second match at 220 pounds in 23 seconds. Hamilton also finished one win short of the third place match.
Tennille Warembourg and Trey McCrumb lost two matches. Cody and Hoyte Holmes each had medical forfeits after their first matches, with C. Holmes getting a win.
Schluckebier said WP competed well, just not with enough consistency, and he also wants to see more commitment from the Broncos.
Conditioning will be a key, he added, as the season moves on. WP heads to Dundy County-Stratton Friday and Garden County Saturday.
