Bronco wrestlers travel to DCS, Garden County

The Wauneta-Palisade wrestlers got two meets under their belts last week with invitationals at Dundy County-Stratton and Garden County.
DCS held a hard meet with a lot of good wrestlers, WP Coach Danny Schluckebier said. The meet will usually have a JV team from a larger school, but McCook attended this year and sent its varsity squad.
Conner Bryner was 2-2 in the 160 pound weight class and took third place.
Ethan Carl at 170 pounds and Cody Holmes at 182 pounds each won one match. Carl placed third and Holmes fourth.
Saturday’s meet at Garden County featured a lot of teams and good competition, Schluckebier said.
“We wrestled better Saturday, with more energy and better attitudes,” he added
Bryner moved from 160 pounds down to 152 pounds for the meet. Bryner went 4-1, then had to forfeit the third place match because he’d reached his five match limit. Overall, Bryner tied for the top spot at the meet in total match points, scoring 35.
Cole Hamilton at 220 pounds and Holmes also won a match.
Several other Broncos would like to move down a weight class, Schluckebier said, but haven’t been able to maintain weight well enough.
“We are still a young team willing to continue to work and grow,” he said.
Schluckebier said WP hasn’t seen as many teams from its district as normal. COVID has affected everyone’s schedule, he said, with some teams opting out of meets and new teams joining.
