Bottom resigns as girls’ basketball coach; Kennedy will head volleyball

Word went out to staff and students this week informing them of more coaching changes at Chase County Schools.
An email from 7-12 Principal Jon Lechtenberg to staff and students noted a new head girls’ basketball coach will replace Mark Bottom next season, and fourth grade teacher Samantha Kennedy, an asst. coach last fall, will take over the head coaching reins for the Lady Longhorn volleyball team.
The announcement comes on the heels of the teaching/coaching resignation from Jodie Schuller, who’s headed the volleyball program for 23 years and has been at CCS for 24. School board members accepted her resignation last week.
Bottom submitted his coaching resignation after five years as head coach, since the 2014-15 season, and one year as assistant in 2013-14. He served as a junior high boys’ basketball coach before that.
Bottom said he’s proud of what the girls have done the last five years, and also credited his assistants.
“I so appreciate what Coach Gleisberg, Coach McNair and Coach Boman have done to help these young athletes work towards becoming young ladies and teach them life skills, not just basketball skills. And how we as a group of coaches worked to come together as one,” he said.
Bottom said he had no intentions of resigning this season.
“Often with change in leadership there can be opportunity for misunderstanding, communication and trust problems. In early February, I felt like that happened and after consideration felt like resignation was the correct way for me to go,” he said.
