Ord’s football team is 3-0 on the season, but a successful field goal kick in the Chanticleers’ Sept. 4 win is making its own news.
That night at their game in Central City, Ord’s kicker Kelen Meyer completed a 58-yard field goal, one of three he hit that night.
His 58-yard kick tied the Class C-2 state record.
Meyer, a senior who hopes to continue kicking at the next level, is the son of Brian and Jane Meyer of Ord, and the grandson of Fred and Sandy Bessler of Imperial.
The 58-yard kick tied the C-2 record held by Drew McClellen of North Platte St. Patrick’s set in 2013.
One yard further in that Ord-Central City game would have tied the all-class high school state record of 59 yards set in 1999 by Chris McClanathan of Millard South.
Grandad, former Longhorn Football Coach Bessler, said Kelen has also found success in the three other sports in which he competes.
That includes qualifying three times for the state high school wrestling meet and three years as a state golf tournament qualifier. He also pitched for the state champion Broken Bow baseball team two years ago.
Bessler was also head boys’ track coach at Chase County Schools during his tenure there, which falls in the same season as golf.
Bessler admitted until his grandson’s team from Ord qualified for the state meet two years ago in North Platte, that he’d never been to a golf tournament ever.
“Leave it to Jane,” he said.
His daughter arranged for a golf cart for Bessler and his wife Sandy, so they could attend. He might have learned a few things that day, he said.
On the gridiron, Kelen also plays defensive back and is an offensive split end for the Chanticleers.
In the Central City game, Kelen had two other successful field goals at 37 and 24 yards. He’s also had an interception in each of the team’s three outings this season.
Ord was ranked No. 3 in Class C-2 in this week’s Omaha World-Herald, and sits No. 6 in the NSAA’s C-2 point standings.
