Youths show enthusiasm during Fire Prevention Week demonstrations

The Imperial Volunteer Fire Department (IVFD) responded to a need to educate preschoolers, kindergartners and fourth graders during Fire Prevention Week.
Volunteers from the fire department were present at Chase County Schools last week to talk to students about fire safety and what to do in an emergency.
On Friday, Todd Courter, Skip Kelly and Fire Chief Doug Mitchell talked to the fourth grade classes and gave students a chance to look at a fire truck up close and get a demonstration on some of the equipment on the truck.
Volunteers Duane Todd and Corkey Waide, IVFD president, spent time with the kindergarten students giving them information on fire safety, the use of fire detectors, calling 911 and a family plan of action in case of a fire in their home.
The youths were also given a demonstration of a fireman putting on his gear, allowing the children a chance to see what they look like in full uniform.
“We wanted them to get used to seeing firemen in full gear so they wouldn’t be afraid of them during an emergency if they had to enter their home,” Todd said.
They explained to the students what firemen do when they enter a home to search for family members.
“Information goes a long way in helping children be less afraid in an emergency,” said Todd.
