Youth essays express belief in patriotism

The VFW Post 4688 and Auxiliary once again sponsored a traditional pre-Thanksgiving dinner of turkey, ham and all the trimmings Sunday evening as a Veterans Day tribute.
Six Chase County Schools students placed in the patriotic essay contests and were also introduced at the annual Veterans Day supper at the VFW Hall.
Five of the six were present to read their essays to the 94 people in attendance who enjoyed the meal and listened to the students’ thoughts on patriotism.
The Patriot’s Pen competition is for grades 6-8 and sponsored by the Auxiliary.
The theme for this age group was “America’s Gift to my Generation.” There was a total of 70 essays submitted in this category.
    The Patriot’s Pen winners were - 1st Morgan Peterson, $75; 2nd Jaiden Hill, $50; and 3rd Piper Lefdal, $25.
The Voice of Democracy competition is for grades 9-12 and sponsored by the VFW Post 4688. Imperial’s Sue Moore, local auxiliary president, noted that there were 94 essays written for this category, but only 20 were submitted.
The theme for the Voice of Democracy essay was “Our Hope for the Future.”
The winners for this contest were - 1st Halle Fiedler, $150; 2nd Emma DeGrasse, $100; and 3rd Gabrielle Krutsinger, $75.
Following each reading of their essay, each student was presented with their check from Post and Auxiliary officers.
Moore and Eldon Kuntzelman, VFW Post 4688 Commander, Imperial, served as emcees for the program.
“All six essays have been submitted to the district level competition,” said Moore.
The first place essays from each division are reprinted with this story.
