School board remains split on drug testing

While there was just discussion about a potential random student drug testing program, Chase County Schools board of education members remained split on whether they wanted the program or not.
Board members discussed the potential policy at their regular meeting Aug. 13.
Board Secretary Sheila Stromberger is firmly against the idea of randomly testing students for drugs and alcohol.
“I feel that it’s the parents responsibility,” Stromberger said. “The schools that do this are crossing that line and taking over too much of the responsibility.”
The board voted to ask administrators to gather more information on costs and percentage of students that would be tested, among other items.
The vote passed, 7-1, with Josh Fries, Cindy Arterburn, Steve Wallin, Carrie Terryberry, Willy O’Neil, Karl Meeske and Jeff Olsen voting for. Dan Reeves was absent.
