Preschool at CCS being looked at for fall

School board members are looking at a possible preschool concept at Chase County Schools.
In his superintendent’s report at the Jan. 14 board meeting, Supt. Larry Lambert proposed the idea for study, with the possibility of starting a preschool for four-year-olds this fall.
No action was taken last week, but the discussion is expected to continue.
Lambert said grant money is available, up to $130,000 over a three-year period, for which he plans to apply. Grant awards will be announced in April.
A handout he gave to board members states, “Research indicates that a quality preschool staffed with a certified teacher creates a positive difference for students and communities.”
It continued, saying preschool graduates have higher grades, greater social and emotional maturity, more academic motivation, lower absenteeism and higher aspirations, among others.
Lambert stressed two areas in suggesting consideration of a preschool—one, that it not be a huge expense to the district and, secondly, whether it could be located in the school.
“We also don’t want to step on the feet of two current programs” in Imperial, he said.
K-6 Principal Becky Odens said there are three rooms now being used for storage that could be available.
She said she visited with Imperial’s two preschools, Rainbow Promise and Little Longhorns. She said those operators were okay with a preschool at CCS.
