Preschool at CCS on agenda for Tuesday vote

While it appeared the idea of a preschool this fall at Chase County Schools was likely off the table due to COVID-19, a vote on it will be part of Tuesday’s monthly CCS board of education meeting.
In an interview Tuesday, interim Supt. Larry Lambert said he plans to have discussion and will suggest a motion at next week’s meeting to approve a preschool for the 2020-21 school year.
Action on the preschool will be on the agenda, he said.
Information titled “Benefits of School-Sponsored PreK” sent to this newspaper on Monday stated, “Chase County Schools received word that preschool Nebraska Dept. of Education (NDE) grants will be approved in early June,” adding that CCS’s status for a grant was “very favorable.”
Lambert confirmed Tuesday that he was notified CCS has been offered one of those grants.
The grant amount cannot be announced until June, Lambert said, due, in part, to suspension of the Nebraska Unicameral because of the pandemic. The Legislature has yet to approve its upcoming two-year budget, and those preschool grants are part of that funding, he said.
Board members approved application for the grant earlier this year, but starting the program would take another vote.
Lambert doesn’t believe the decision to start a preschool or not can wait until June, despite the fact the grant amount won’t be public until then.
