Numbers up in math, English, music classes

More students are also taking dual-credit classes for college

Principal Jon Lechtenberg had some good news to report to school board members regarding an increase in several grade 7-12 classes.
His report came during the board’s Sept. 16 meeting, which was moved a week later to accommodate the 2019-20 budget hearing.
Lechtenberg said it’s good to see more students in advanced math classes, as well as music.
He noted CCS has 58 high school students who are taking a math class this year at a higher level than Algebra II, compared to 39 last year.
In classes above the English III level which include English IV and college English, enrollment is also up from 26 last year to 40 this year, he said.
“When it comes to maximizing the four years that we get with these students, I think those (numbers) are positive,” he said.
He said whether CCS graduates go on to college or into a career, the goal is to get as much out of their high school education as they can.
Regarding music classes, Lechtenberg said numbers are up considerably, especially in the junior high.
“Numbers are up substantially in seventh and eighth grade band and choir, probably more so than what we anticipated.
“We’ve got a lot of kids wanting to do those and that’s exciting,” he said.
One area Lechtenberg said administration wanted to develop further is the school’s relationship with Mid-Plains Community College (MPCC).
One of the important aspects in that relationship is the dual-credit program, in which a student can get both high school and college credit by taking specific courses taught by CCS teachers with master’s degrees.
Numbers of students taking dual-credit classes also have risen this school year. Lechtenberg’s report shows 111 students in dual-credit classes  this fall compared to 52 last year in the fall semester.
