As part of Office Depot’s Start Proud! program, Chase County Schools graduate Shelby Leyland was one of 10 teachers across the country given the All-Star Educator award.
Leyland, a 2005 CCS graduate and daughter of Jeff and Jo Leyland of Imperial, is a K-5 music teacher at Lowell Elementary School in Seattle, Washington.
In its second year, the Start Proud program assists low-income schools by providing students, parents and teachers the supplies needed for the school year.
This year, Office Depot partnered with Boise Paper and Domtar Paper to fill 18,000 backpacks with products such as notebooks, folders, pencils and glue, and distributed them to students at the chosen 10 schools.
Teachers at each of the schools received pallets of classroom supplies, donated in part by their neighbors through Office Depot’s in-store school supply drive program.
In addition to the supplies one teacher from each school was named an All Star Educator.
Leyland was chosen by her fellow teachers at Lowell Elementary for the honor.
She received $1,500 worth of premium supplies, in addition to supplies given to all teachers at her school, including a new laptop.
