Heathers named TeamMates mentor of the month

    Schyler Heathers of Imperial has been named August TeamMates mentor of the month.
    Employed with Chief Buildings, he and his wife, Makala, are expecting their first child in February.
    Heathers enjoys hunting, fishing, golf and many sports, but is happy to make time to be with his mentee, Grayson.
    They started meeting when Grayson was in third grade and have completed three years together.
    They, along with other mentors and mentees, meet up once a week during the students’ lunch time, before or after school or a school event such as a volleyball or a football game during the season.
    Heathers said he wanted to be a mentor because he believes it’s important for people other than teachers and parents to take an interest in these children and cheer them on to success. It’s also a way to get involved with the community.
    Heathers and Grayson enjoy outdoor activities like throwing a ball and board games when it’s too cold to be outside, or just talking about Grayson’s hobbies, sports he’s involved in and his interests.
    The local TeamMates program is always looking for new mentors as there is a waiting list to match up eager mentees.
    Heathers wants possible mentors to know it’s not a big time commitment and it’s so enjoyable watching the TeamMate grow up year after year.
    Heathers has enjoyed getting to know other mentors and mentees throughout the years.

    The TeamMates mentoring program was founded in 1991 by legendary University of Nebraska football Coach, Tom Osborn and his wife Nancy.
