Fourth graders at Chase County Schools have been working hard for their upcoming poetry recital.
The recital is set for Friday, Dec. 20, at 9 a.m. in the school auditorium, and community members are welcome.
Students learned to write eight types of poems: acrostic, cinquain, color, couplets, diamante, haiku, shape and limericks.
Acrostic is a vertical word in which each word must begin with a letter in the topic word.
Cinquain includes five lines: one word title, two words adjectives, three word verbs, fourth word feeling and one-word synonyms for title.
A color poem describes a color using the five senses, while couplet is a two-line poem that rhymes.
Diamante is a seven-line poem, beginning with a topic and ending with its antonym.  Haiku includes five syllables, 7 syllables and five syllables poem.
Shape poems are words that describe the object and are placed to make the shape of the object.
Limericks have five lines with lines one, two and five being long and rhyming, while lines three and four are short and also rhyme.
This is the fourth year fourth graders will be doing a poetry recital. Students will choose their favorite winter poem and recite it on stage.
After the recital there will be a small reception for students and family members.
The event gives students an opportunity to practice public speaking and to show off their creative writing talents.
