While nothing has been officially canceled yet, Halle Fiedler’s exchange student trip to Indonesia most likely will be.
A final decision will be made by the Rotary Exchange officers on May 31.
In preparation for her year abroad, Fielder took summer classes last year.
Currently, she is done with all of her core classes, which would have left her with only electives for her time in Indonesia.
Because of that, Fiedler wrote a letter to the school board, co-signed by her parents, Jill and Scott.
In the letter, Fiedler asked the board to allow her to graduate in December 2020.
“Graduating a semester early would allow me to focus on getting ahead with my college credits to prepare myself for college the following year,” Fiedler’s letter reads. “It would also allow me to earn money for college by working at my part-time jobs.”
The school board approved her request at the regular meeting on May 12.
“We had a Zoom meeting with all the out-bound students and the (Rotary) lady in charge,” Fiedler said. Fiedler and her fellow travelers were asked their opinions on still going or not.
“We all obviously wanted to go,” Fiedler said, “but she told us to start making plan Bs and Cs” to be prepared if the trip doesn’t happen.
“It’s not going to be fun to prepare for it not happening,” she added.
“I’ve been wanting to do this forever,” Fiedler said, “but there’s nothing I can do about it.”
“Everybody’s going through their own thing and it’s not the worst for me,” she added. “I have to think about that. It’s just a matter of more opportunities possibly in the future, so maybe this happened for a reason.”
