Egg roulette a messy, fun-filled game

Chase County Schools (CCS) elementary students’ laughter, chants and applause filled the high school gym Monday, as they celebrated their accomplishments in the Accelerated Reader program, Hoops for Heart and Jump Rope for Heart.
The afternoon started off by recognizing K-6 students who earned the most points in Accelerated Reader, a computerized program that tests reading comprehension.
Throughout the year, students select books at their reading level, read independently and take an independent comprehension test on the computer. Each book is worth a certain number of points based on its length and reading level.
Jodie Schuller, CCS K-6 physical education teacher, then announced that this year’s end goal for Hoops for Heart and Jump Rope for Heart, a program that teaches students how to keep fit and healthy while raising funds for heart disease research and education, was $10,000. The participating CCS students went above and beyond that goal by raising
$14,000, she noted.
There was a layer of expectant excitement in the air as students applauded their fellow classmates on their achievements and patiently waited for the main event—egg roulette.
A group of teachers volunteered to sit in front of the crowd and have students crack open eggs on their heads. Neither teacher nor student knew if the egg was hard boiled or raw, hence the name egg roulette.
Some teachers gladly accepted the provided plastic ponchos and construction hats to protect themselves from the onslaught of yolk, while others embraced their fate hat free.
As Schuller, who was emcee, tried ending the event, teachers coerced her into putting on a poncho herself and joining them on the front line.
The teachers then proceeded to line up armed and ready to egg Schuller, sending the entire gym into a frenzy of cheering and jumping.
