Chase County juniors heading to Bridgeport for ACT prep

Improving ACT scores a goal of 7-12 principal

Administration at Chase County Schools is taking several steps to help the junior class improve ACT scores.
The latest will be a trip to Bridgeport next week, where students will take in a workshop given by ACT consultant Chad Cargill of Harrah, Oklahoma.
CCS is providing the bus transportation, cost of the March 18 program and lunch for all CCS students attending, said 7-12 Principal Jon Lechtenberg.
Cost to attend the three-hour workshop is $30 per student which includes the lunch.
Lechtenberg said CCS reserved 50 spots at the workshop for this year’s 42 juniors and a few underclassmen who plan to take the spring ACT.
In a letter sent last month to parents of CCS juniors, Lechtenberg wrote, “One of our goals at CCS is to prepare students the best we possibly can to take college entrance exams.”
According to information in the letter, Cargill, the workshop presenter, realized as a high school freshman that many scholarships are based on ACT scores.
He took the ACT 18 times, raising his score from 19 to 32. A score of 36 is perfect.
Lechtenberg said Cargill’s program involves guidance on how to take the ACT and pointers on exam questions that are often overlooked.
“I’m passionate about giving our kids the opportunities that can open doors,” Lechtenberg said.
He compares it somewhat to the time students dedicate to sports and FFA.
“You can teach the components but if you never get the chance to put those components together, you’re not as prepared,” he said.
