CCS working on meal program

Chase County Schools is working with the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) to provide possible grant funding so the school can provide breakfast and lunch free of charge to children ages 0-18 during the school closure.

Principals Jon Lechtenberg and Becky Odens reported on the meal program at Tuesday night’s emergency CCS board meeting.

Details regarding locations and times will be released at a later time. They hoped to hear if the grant was awarded by Wednesday or Thursday this week.

One of the requirements for planning is to get a household count, said 7-12 Principal Lechtenberg.

Patrons are asked to fill out and complete the meal program link on the school website’s main page at: chase
countyschools.org.

If unable to open the link contact the school at 308-882-4228 or email swheeler@chasecountyschools.org with a household contact name, phone number and number of children requesting breakfast and/or lunch.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Lechtenberg said 21 bagged meals were already picked up that day for lunch and breakfast, as the word got out.

The NDE grant, if received by CCS, would fund much of the food costs in providing the bagged meals, said Lechtenberg. The CCS grant was written for 400 people, he said.

Lechtenberg emphasized the program is available to Chase County households with children age 0-18. They do not have to be CCS students, he added.
