CCS student teacher enjoying Imperial, students

Mikaela Stephenson, a senior at Chadron State College (CSC), has been student teaching at Chase County Schools (CCS) for two weeks.
Stephenson started off the semester at CCS in Alex Schilke’s 7-12 English classroom.
She will move to Renae Bottom’s room on March 6.
While she hasn’t had the chance to explore Imperial itself, Stephenson enjoys the family-like atmosphere of CCS.
“From the moment I walked in the doors it has just been a welcoming community,” she said. “(Staff) have been really supportive and have made me feel welcome.”
The feeling is mutual.
“(Stephenson) is a very bright and passionate young educator,” Schilke said. “She strives to do her very best every day.
“She has been a pleasure to work with during the beginning of her student teaching experience here at Chase County,” she added. “She has done an excellent job of sharing her love for learning to the students.”
Stephenson is commuting from Grant, where her husband is in his first year as the art teacher at Perkins County Schools.
“Obviously I’d like to stay in the area (after graduation),” she added.
Stephenson is a graduate of Chadron High School and will graduate in May from CSC with a degree in Secondary English Education.
In addition to her college studies, Stephenson is “a great student of English,” Schilke said.
She has had several works published in literary journals, and will be presenting a critical essay at the Sigma Tau Delta—an international English honors society—conference this spring.
