For the week of February 24th, the Longhorn speakers had a very busy week with a conference competition and Best of the West. SPVA took place on Wednesday, February 26th, at Chase County. Best of the West, on the other hand, took place at Gering on Saturday, March 1st.
SPVA was a very successful meet, with the Longhorns being awarded ten medals. Claiming victory for Chase County was George Colton in Persuasive Speaking. Given the medal for second place went to Andrew Wiest in Humorous Prose and Colton in Serious Prose. Many events placed third, including Jasmine Johnson in Entertainment, Wiest in Serious Prose, and Paige Nickless in Humorous Prose. The group acting event, Oral Interpretation of Drama, also placed third. Those members include Colton, Wiest, Nickless, and Jesus Juarez. Coming in fifth were Nickless in Entertainment and Annabelle Kimble in Program of Oral Interpretation. In sixth place was Johnson in Program of Oral Interpretation.
The winner of the meet was Bridgerport. Coming in second place was Perkins County, and Hershey in third. Only four points away from third place was Chase County.
With a quick turnaround from the conference, the Longhorns then traveled three hours to compete in Best of the West. Chase County took their helpful comments from judges and went into Gering with a good mindset. The team had six events place. Placing first for the Longhorns was Wiest in Humorous Prose. Capturing second was Colton in Serious Prose. Johnson in Entertainment and West in Serious were given third. In fourth was the group event, Oral Interpretation of Drama. Coming in sixth was Nickless in Entertainment. With these points, the Longhorns placed Runner-Up in the Class C and D division.
Up next, the Longhorns are splitting up and going to two different locations, Maxwell and Minden. The newcomers of the speech team are heading to Maxwell with Assistant Coach Peyton Rowley. Past speech competitors will travel to Mindin with Head Coach Alex Schilke. Both of these meets take place on Saturday, March 8th, and begin at 8:00 am.
