CCS Senior Medals at State Speech

At the State Meet in Kearney this last Thursday, much success was celebrated for the participants, including a state medalist in C1 Serious Prose. Andrew Wiest, a senior at Chase County High School, brought home a 6th place medal with his performance of the script “The Little White Button.” In this piece, Wiest is an inmate at a prison who is sent to solitary confinement. The inmate then proceeds to go mentally insane after losing a button off of his shirt.
Other speeches given at Kearney were Wiest in Humorous Prose and Johnson competed in Entertainment Speaking. In Wiest’s second event, he acts as many different characters, including a Rancher and his wife. The story consists of a rancher named Hicks as he adventures into a town called Sleepy Gulch and has the most boring day ever just trying to kill some time. On the other hand, his wife stays home and makes a lot of money. She does this by signing a movie deal, meeting the president, and more. In Johnson’s event, she gave a speech on “The Horrors of Driving”. This piece is self-written and goes over three points, including which parent is better to drive with, how to pass your driver’s test, and excuses to get out of a ticket.
From the 2025 season, the Longhorns brought home four plaques, which were all Runner-Up. These were accomplished at the meets of the Chase County Invite, Blue and Gold Meet at North Platte, Ogallala Invite, and Best of the West at Gering. Overall, the Chase County speakers had a great season.
